Photo Guide

The better your photo, the more magical your portrait. Here's exactly what works — and what doesn't.

Well lit — natural daylight is best. Sit your pet near a window, or use a lamp behind you. Dark-coloured pets especially need good light.

Facing the camera — eyes visible, expression clear. This is where all the character lives.

Close-up portrait — head and chest is the sweet spot. Not so far that they're tiny, not so close you lose the ears.

Eye level and sharp — crouch down to their world. You should be able to see individual hairs and whiskers clearly.

✗ What doesn't work

Too dark — low light is the most common cause of poor results, especially for black or dark-coloured pets.

Too close and from above — ears are cut off and the angle distorts their features. Step back and get to their eye level.

Too far away — your pet should fill the frame, not be a small figure in a big scene. Move closer!

Shot from above with obstruction — overhead angles rarely flatter, and hands or leads in frame confuse the background removal.

Does Cosmic Pets use AI to generate my pet? ▾

No, and that's very much the point. We don't pass your pet's photo through an AI image generator, because that would strip away everything that makes them them: their unique markings, their expression, their wonderful imperfections. What we do is cut your pet out from their photo and place them into a beautifully AI-generated cosmic backdrop. Your pet stays 100% real and recognisable. Only the world around them gets the magic treatment.

How long does it take to generate a portrait? ▾

Usually between 20 and 45 seconds. The magic happens in a few stages: removing the background, generating your cosmic world, and compositing everything together. Grab a biscuit, your portrait will be ready before you're done.

Is it free? ▾

You get 6 free portraits to try, no account needed. After that, you can unlock more with a small top-up pack. We're still in early access so pricing may evolve, but we're committed to keeping it affordable.

What pets can I use? ▾

Any pet you love! Cats and dogs work brilliantly, but we've seen gorgeous results with rabbits, birds, horses, and the occasional very dignified lizard. If it's a pet, it's welcome here. Just make sure it's a good, well-lit portrait picture of your pet. You can also adjust it a little bit to help you get the best results.

What format does my portrait download in? ▾

Your portrait downloads as a high-quality JPEG, perfect for sharing on social media or using as a phone wallpaper. For printing, it works best up to A4 size.

Do you store my photo? ▾

Your photo is used only to generate your portrait and is not stored on our servers after processing completes. We have no interest in collecting your pet photos — we just want to make them cosmic.

The portrait doesn't look quite right — what can I do? ▾

Try generating again, each portrait is created fresh, so results vary each time. The single biggest improvement you can make is using a better photo: well-lit, face close-up (no cut ears) and in focus. Check our Photo Guide for a full breakdown of what works best. Does it work with people? ▾

It sure does, but this tool was conceived and developed for pets only, so while you can go ahead and try a photo of your nan, your best results will probably be of your pet. But we're not going to stop you, as long as you have fun.
